Job Description
WIRED readers often come to us with tough questions about how to engage with technology. How can I get more out of my smart speaker? How can I protect my personal data online? What’s the best age to give my kid their own smartphone? What’s the most low-carbon way to commute if it’s too far to walk? These aren’t trivial questions; our readers look to us for trustworthy answers that require expertise, patience, and research.

To that end, WIRED seeks a talented writer devoted to reader service. We’re looking for a journalist with subject-matter expertise across multiple topics in our world: mobile apps, the smart home, online services, privacy, security, battery technology, and parenting tech, among others. We’re not looking for the usual SEO chum; we want to build a library of insightful articles that provide clear, long-lasting value to the WIRED reader.

Your clips should show strong writing skills, sourced reporting, thoughtful insight into trends, and a track record of producing clear service journalism, how-to content, and reported news stories. This position reports to WIRED’s service editor.

Primary Responsibilities
• Reporting and writing 2 to 3 reader service stories per week across WIRED’s areas of interest.
• Collaborating with the service editor and other section editors to generate reader service ideas and help shape the direction and tone of WIRED’s service journalism
• Developing and maintaining reporting sources with experts across topics in the WIRED world
• Refreshing older service stories when appropriate to help ensure our guidance is up-to-date and accurate
• Contributing to coverage of major events (including Apple events, Google I/O, and CES), identifying opportunities for reader service pieces that can help our audience navigate changes to the product landscape
• Contributing to WIRED’s coverage of breaking news and trends reporting when needed
• Working with WIRED’s social, photo, and video teams to help shape overall storytelling efforts
• Follow SEO and affiliate linking best practices

Desired Skills and Qualifications
• Exemplary writing skills, with the clips to prove it
• The ability to point at a technology and tell us how it’s going to change our future
• Experience writing breaking news content
• Experience writing reader service and how-to content
• A roster of sources within the tech industry
